About this object
A photograph of McRae's Hotel at Te Wairoa, following the Tarawera eruption of 10 June 1886. The significant structural damage to the hotel and surrounding buildings is evident. The landscape and buildings are coated with piles of ash and volcanic outfall. Men, women and horses are all visible in front of the hotel. The horse drawn cart in front of the hotel is laden with timber and debris.
