About this object
A photograph of damaged buildings at Te Wairoa, Rotorua, following the Mount Tarawera eruption of June 1886.

At the left is Sophia's Whare and at the right the Terrace Hotel. The badly damaged McRae's Hotel is out of frame but was positioned further to the left of the two visible buildings. The buildings are badly damaged with volcanic residue piled high around them. A group of men, possibly a recovery party, stand around a small building at the left of the image, possibly a storehouse. A team of horses stand at the front of the Terrace Hotel.

Photographer, A A Ryan.
