About this object
Mid length portrait of Sir James Carroll taken in March 1922. The cabbage tree in the background is on the banks of the Wairoa River at the back of the Takitumu Marae. It was under this tree that Carroll's placenta was buried.

The photograph is pasted into an album detailing a trip by representatives of the Napier Harbour Board and other local bodies to view public works at Waikokopu, Waikaremoana and Wairoa.
