Brief Description
A manuscript recording the settlements of Norsewood and Dannevirke. Both the author and exact date of this manuscript are unknown, however a brief mention of World War II confirms that it was written after this period.
The first page of this manuscript records the arrival in New Zealand of the Swedish settler, Bror Erik Friberg and his role in recruiting immigrants from Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway who travelled to New Zealand on the Hovding and Ballarat in the early 1870s.
It records the opening of schools in Dannevirke and Norsewood in 1873 and the history of the Lutheran church in this area. It includes mention of the Methodist Minister, Edward Nielson; Pastor Sass, the first Lutheran Pastor to live in Norsewood; Pastor H M Ries and Pastor Legarth.
This manuscript includes information about the sawmills at Makotuku that supplied timber for the early buildings and the first European settlers in Dannevirke, Captain George Hamilton and Mr M Dougal.
The author records information on the descendants of Pastor Ries, notably his four nephews by the name of Bernstein, as well as a list of names of the people first selected for settlement in Dannevirke.
It records information about the purchasing of land from Hohepa Paewai, direct descendant of Paora Rangi Whakaewa, Chief of the Rangitaane iwi.
The author notes his methods in his search to learn more about the building of the Old Lutheran Church, recording the succession of Dannevirke newspapers from the Bush Advocate to the Dannevirke Evening News and relating the story of an excavated charred tree stump dated circa 1888. This manuscript concludes by stating that the church must have been built around 1888 - 1890.
