Brief Description
Letters from Carlile, McLean, Scannell and Wood to various recipients circa 1937 to 1940. Includes originals printed on Carlile, McLean, Scannell and Wood letterhead and carbon copies.

a) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding an agreement between himself and F Thorp and dated 29 January 1937. Letter states the amount of rent Hay was receiving from a tenant and that a proposal by Thorp should be accepted as the Government will probably not accept his request for an extension of a debt-free loan.

b) Carbon copy of above.

c) Letter to Kennedy, Lusk Morling and Willis regarding consultation with J A Louis Hay and dated 29 January 1937. Letter shows the slight discrepancies in payments between Hay and Thorp and asks that a decision be made in regards to rent as soon as possible.

d) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the acceptance of F Thorp's offer on rent and dated 30 January 1937.

e) Letter to Kennedy, Lusk, Morling and Willis regarding the acceptance of F Thorp's rent agreement and dated 30 January 1937.

f) Letter to J A Louis Hay stating the terms of rent with F Thorp and asking if any corrections are needed and dated 3 February 1937.

g) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding a reply from the Treasury and dated 3 March 1940. The letter states that Hay cannot secure a re-advancement of the loan if F Thorp repays it in its entirety and that any decision from here is Hay's. It also states that all costs for new mortgages will have to be borne by Hay and asks if he has been successful in securing an arrangement with the Building Society.

h) Carbon copy of above.

i) Letter to Kennedy, Lusk, Morling and Willis regarding F Thorp's repayment of the loan and dated 15 March 1940. The letter provides detail behind a specific clause of the agreement between F Thorp and J A Louis Hay regarding repayment of a debt-free earthquake loan on the land and building and suggests that Thorp is trying to deprive Hay of money entitled to him and that this clause be taken into consideration before any agreement can be made.

j) Carbon copy of above.

k) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding Thorp's repayment of the loan and dated 15 March 1940. The letter states that as part of Hay and Thorp's contract it is in Thorp's power to either pay off or keep the mortgage on the building and land and suggests that Hay hold off on further action until Thorp has made a decision on the matter.

l) Letter to J A Louis Hay stating that a lengthy reply from Kennedy, Lusk, Morling and Willis is included for Hay's consideration and dated 19 March 1940.

m) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the interest-free loan and dated 12 April 1940. The letter states that the firm has contacted an accountant who has shown that if Hay were to renounce his right to a debt-free loan for 28 years it would result in considerable cost to himself. Includes a handwritten note correcting the amount.

n) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the valuation of land and the amount which will need to be mortgaged and dated 23 April 1940.

o) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding a delay in completing negotiations and dated 26 April 1940.

p) Letter to J A Louis Hay enclosing the firm's account with Hay and dated 14 August 1940.

q) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the acknowledgement of payment of stamp duty fees by Hay and clarification of the situation and dated 15 August 1940.

r) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the clarification of a misunderstanding and dated 16 August 1940.

s) Carbon copy of above.

t) Letter to Kennedy, Lusk, Morling and Willis regarding the agreement between F Thorp and J A Louis Hay and dated 20 August 1940. The letter states that the total amount of outstanding loan needs to be revealed, that new mortgages will be drawn up and the clearing up of other minor issues with the agreement.

u) Letter to Kennedy, Lusk, Morling and Willis enclosing an engrossment of transfer as well as a drawn-up draft and dated 7 November 1940.

v) Letter to J A Louis Hay regarding the finalisation of the agreement between F Thorp and Hay and dated 7 November 1940.

Letter states that a final draft agreement has been received which gives details of final costs and payments to be borne by both parties to the agreement.
