A photograph of naval personnel searching for bodies amongst the debris on Heretaunga Street in Hastings following the Hawke's Bay earthquake of 3 February 1931. The men are holding shovels or moving and searching through the debris. Cars, guttering, cornices, steel beams and bricks are discernible amongst the ruins.
