View of the Criterion Hotel, Napier, taken during the reconstruction of the hotel following the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931.

The photograph has been taken from an empty site looking across the intersection of Emerson Street and Hastings Street. The main structure of the two storey building has been erected. The building is surrounded by scaffolding. Piles of building materials are located in the foreground. The temporary building for the New Zealand Insurance Company is on the left.
