About this object
View of Napier taken during the reconstruction of the Central Business District following the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931.

The photograph has been taken from Bluff Hill looking south east. Tennyson Street runs through the centre of the image. Among the buildings that are visible along the far side of the street are the Masonic Hotel, the Market Reserve Building, Bowman’s Building, the Kaiapoi Building, Gladstone Chambers and Halsbury Chambers, all of which were completed in 1932. On the opposite side of the road, construction is underway on a number of buildings including the Bryant’s Building (located opposite the Market Reserve Building) and the Daily Telegraph Building (completed 1933).

Emerson Street is visible to the right of Tennyson Street. In the distance, Norfolk Island Pines can be seen along Marine Parade.
