About this object
View of the General Post Office, Wellington. The photograph has been taken at night, possibly from Post Office Square. The building is decorated with lights. The lights were installed as part of the celebrations that were held to mark the arrival of William Lee Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket, who became the Governor General of New Zealand in 1904, a position that he held until 1909. A marquee is visible in the bottom left hand corner of the image.

A note on the album page reads: Reception of Lord Plunkett. G.P.O. Wellington. Illuminations.

Plunket was an Irish peer - céad míle fáilte is Irish Gaelic for ‘One hundred thousand welcomes’. céud mílle fáilte is the Scots Gaelic version - the wording used here is apparently a combination of the two.
