About this object
View of Post Office Square, Wellington, possibly taken from the roof of the General Post Office. The photograph is thought to have been taken during a reception that was held to mark the appointment of William Lee Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket (1864-1920), who became the Governor General of New Zealand in 1904, a position that he held until 1909. A marquee has been erected in Post Office Square. Horse drawn carriages are parked to the left and right of the marquee. Rows of military personal stand in around the marquee. A crowd has gathered to watch the ceremony.

Jervois Quay is located to the left of Post Office Square. The Bond Store, an 1892 building designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere, is located along Jervois Quay in the top left hand corner of the photograph. The Queens Chambers stands on the corner of Jervois Quay and Grey Street. Advertisements for Huddart Parker Company Limited and Henry Hughes (patent agents) appear on the roof of the building.

A note on the album page reads: Reception of Lord Plunkett.
