About this object
View of Adelaide Road, Wellington from near the Basin Reserve looking south. Probably road widening for the electric tramway and dates to early 1900s (the tramway opened 1904). Commercial premises and houses are located on either side of the street. An electric tram is visible down the street. The road is also occupied by a horse and cart, and some cyclists. The photograph is thought to have been taken during the process of widening the road.

A note on the album page reads: Street Widening (Adelaide Road).

View from near the Basin Reserve looking south. I believe the tram is a horse tram heading away from the camera (towards Newtown), so the horses are hidden behind the tram. Also there are no overhead wires visible. A photo with similar view (from 1909-1914) in the Turnbull Collection (https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22839570) shows double electric tram tracks with overhead masts in the middle of a widened road. On that basis, this photo probably shows road widening for construction of electric tramway and dates to early 1900s (electric tramway opened 1904).
