Brief Description
The letter is written by Allen Edmondson from Keighley, to his son Jonathan Edmondson, Methodist's Chapel, Stourport, Worcestershire on 20 May 1805.
In the letter Allen Edmondson writes that Jonathan Edmondson's mother is poorly through her dropsical complaint, which has caused her legs to swell. She can hardly walk any distance. He then discusses money issues and bills that need to be paid and how religion has supported him in his old age and as a result his love of God has strengthened over fifty years. Jonathan Edmondson's mother also has a praying spirit to God but struggles in that she cannot love and serve him better. He finishes the letter with the hope that Jonathan Edmondson and his family are well in body and soul.
On the front of the letter Jonathan Edmondson has written the date he replied to his father which was 27 May 1805.

I believe this is the Allen Edmondson that I took as a subject for history dissertation at Oxford University. I used Edmondson's diary and Robert Atkinson's commonplace book as source material. Robert Atkinson was his brother-in-Law and executor of his will. I am re-visiting the research during this horrible lock down and would love to see the letter and share any insight you can give me into his family. My research concluded that he was a key figure in the popular Enlightenment. An avid reader and book buyer. A Methodist layman with radical political leanings.

I am the 4 x great grandaughter of the Allen Edmondson who wrote the letter. I would love to see a copy of the actual letter if that is possible. Allen talks about his wife's illness, dropsy. She died of this the following year 1806, at home in Keighley, Yorkshire.
