About this object
A photograph of a group standing next to a J class locomotive on the railway turntable at Dannevirke, 1887. The photograph was taken shortly after the opening of the line from Napier to Dannevirke in 1884. The image captures the trial run of the J class locomotive, which was then the most powerful and the largest in Hawke's Bay. In March 1887 trains began running regularly between Napier and Woodville. The J class engine is noted as being of light green, with yellow, black and white lining.
