About this object
Photograph of the Eskdale War Memorial Church in Eskdale, Hawke's Bay.

A cabbage tree stands in the foreground. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: Typical cabbage tree (Cordyline australis) of New Zealand. Does not grow in the forest but in the valleys (bordering forest) and in open hills and plains. Possibly taken in the 1930s.

Church lies along State Highway 5, designed by James Chapman-Taylor and dedicated in 1920. The church was built in memory of a local man, Percival Beattie, who was killed near the end of the First World War.

Photographer, possibly H S Cottrell.
