About this object
View of Christ Church, built in 1835, at Russell in the Bay of Islands, taken on 25 July 1914. The photograph has been taken from the grave yard looking towards one side of the church.

A grave in the right foreground marks the resting place of six men from the 18-gun sloop HMS Hazard who died defending the Northland town, then known as Kororāreka, on 11 March 1845. Other gravestones that are visible include those belonging to Joanna Emilie Platow, and Ella and Frank Williams.

A note on the album page reads: Church of England, Russell. The oldest church in NEW ZEALAND.
