About this object
View of Motuarohia Island or Roberton Island, Northland, taken on 19 July 1915. In November 1841 Maketū Wharetōtara, also known as Wiremu Kīngi Maketū, the son of the Ngāpuhi chief Ruhe of Waimate, killed Thomas Bull, Elizabeth Roberton, her two children and Isabella Brind, granddaughter of the Ngāpuhi leader Rewa, who lived with the Robertons on the island. The photograph has been taken looking towards a cliff face. The cliff overlooks the sea.
A note on the album page reads: Motu Arohia. Boy who got away from the house was chased and thrown over this cliff, 20 November 1841.
