About this object
View of Motuarohia Island known as Roberton Island, Northland, taken on 19 July 1915. In November 1841 Maketū Wharetōtara, also known as Wiremu Kīngi Maketū, the son of the Ngāpuhi chief Ruhe of Waimate, killed Thomas Bull, Elizabeth Roberton, her two children and Isabella Brind, granddaughter of the Ngāpuhi leader Rewa, who lived with the Robertons on the island. The photograph has been taken from a hillside looking towards a beach. A single small building is visible near the shoreline.

A note on the album page reads: Motu Arohia Island, 20 November 1841 - five persons murdered here. Mrs Robertson, her two children, a half caste boy and man servant by a Māori.
