About this object
View of the Marsden Cross at Oihi Bay, taken on 22 July 1914. The cross marks the spot where Reverend Samuel Marsden preached the first Christian service held on New Zealand soil. The sermon was held on Christmas Day 1814, with Ruatara acting as interpreter. The memorial cross was unveiled in 1907.
The photograph has been taken from the shoreline of Oihi Bay looking up the hill towards the memorial cross. Further up the hill on the right, a tombstone and cast iron railing are visible. This grave was possibly erected in memory of members of the missionary John King's family.
A note on the album page reads: Te Puna. Marsden Cross. To the right graves of King family.
Photographer, Russell Duncan.
