About this object
View of Okiato in the Bay of Islands, possibly taken in 1914. The photograph has been taken from an elevated position looking across a channel of water towards an island. Succulents grow in the foreground

A note on the album page reads: Okiato or Russell. The site of the house where Gov Hobson lived in 1840 - after Gov Hobson left Bay of Islands, Kororareka was called Russell.

A piece of paper has been glued onto the album page. It reads: Kororareka was never the seat of government, nor the capital of New Zealand. When Captain Hobson arrived at the Bay of Islands, a place called Okiato, then occupied by Captain Clendon was bought, and was taken [possession?] of by Captain Hobson as Government House. To this the name of Russell was given. But afterwards, when the site of Auckland was fixed upon and purchased from the Maoris, the name Russell, was transferred to Kororareka.

Photographer, Russell Duncan.
