About this object
A view of the Port of Napier, taken from Bluff Hill. Part of an album of coloured scenery images.
The vessel on the left berthed on the eastern side of the wharf is possibly the Kaipara. The ship in the middle is possibly the Union Steamer Ship Collier Kartigi and on the right on the eastern side of the Glasgow wharf is the Napier based coaster Kopara owned by Richardson & Co. The Kopara was in port from the 13-25 January 1940 while the other two were in from 19-20 January 1940.

This photo was probably taken on either the 19th or 20th January 1940. The vessel on the left berthed on the eastern side of Geddis Wharf looks like the Kaipara owned by the NZ Shipping Co and is painted in dazzle camouflage to make it difficult for enemy vessels, particularly U-Boats, to estimate a ship’s range, speed, and direction. The ship in the middle looks like the Union Steam Ship collier Kartigi and on the right on the eastern side of Glasgow Wharf is the Napier based coaster Kopara owned by Richardson & Co. The Kaipara was in port from the 13-25/1/1940 while the other two 19-20/1/1940. The lack of shadow suggests this was taken late in the day, and as the Kopara sailed at 1220 on the 20th, that would more likely put the date of the photo as the 19/1/1940.
