About this object
A photograph of a group in the shallows of the beach holding onto a boat laden with an iron pot, Whakaari Peninsula, Tangoio.
The men, dressed in full bathing suits, are posed holding onto to a small boat in which a whaling pot sits. They have removed an old iron whaling pot buried in the sand. The peninsula is the site of the old whaling station run by William Morris in the early 1840s.
It is noted on the card beneath the photograph : Recovery achieved and iron pot lifted into boat - it's weight about seven off. This pot is a relic of the first commercial industry in Hawke's Bay.
