About this object
A photograph of a group in a hole in the sand on the Whakaari Peninsula, Tangoio, 23 February 1916. The men, dressed in full bathing suits, are removing an old iron whaling pot buried in the sand. The peninsula is the site of the old whaling station run by William Morris in the early 1840s. It is noted on the card beneath the photograph: The pot was rolled from its original position into the sea early in 1916. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting the pot out of the soft sand owing to its weight and also to suction.
