About this object
A photograph of a group digging in the sand on the Whakaari Peninsula, Tangoio.
The men, dressed in full bathing suits, are removing an old iron whaling pot buried in the sand. The peninsula is the site of the old whaling station run by William Morris in the early 1840s.
It is noted on the card beneath the photograph : The whaling station at Whakaari was abandoned by William Morris in or prior to the year 1844. Reverend W Colenso records that Morris had a whaling station at Kidnappers in 1844.
