About this object
View of Pompallier House at Russell in the Bay of Islands, possibly taken in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The building was erected by French missionaries from the Society of Mary, also known as Marists, as part of their headquarters at Kororareka (renamed Russell in 1844).
The photograph has been taken looking towards the main entrance to the building. The lower storey of the house was built using rammed earth (or 'pise de terre') while the upper floor is timber-framed ('pan de bois') with earth panels. The hipped roof is clad in both corrugated iron and shingles.
The building is partially obscured by trees and shrubs.
Photographer, Russell Duncan.
