About this object
View of the ruins of a stone house at Paihia in the Bay of Islands, possibly taken in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The photograph has been taken looking towards the main entrance to the house. The walls of the house are constructed of stone. The house has a shingle roof. The house is in a state of disrepair.
A note on the album page reads: Captain Jacob of the East India Co’s Service, visited the Bay of Islands in February 1833 and in March he wrote: - “One native, a chief baptized by the name of David, had built himself a stone home in the English style” – This is what is now known as John Fox’s house.
Photographer, Russell Duncan.
