View of Petane Beach thought to have been taken during the rescue of the Boojum, 11 May 1887.
A group of men has gathered on the beach. Several men are using a rope to pull a lifeboat ashore. Three shovels lie in the foreground.
The Boojum was a launch working at Napier Port. On 11 May, 1887, the ship Northumberland was stranded in a severe gale at anchor unable to berth. The Boojum, sent out to assess the situation, capsized washing up on Petane Beach.
