Among the businesses that are located along Gladstone Road are a barbershop, E W Burton (General and furnishing ironmonger), the Poverty Bay Herald, a dentist and surgeon, C W Muir (Bookseller and stationer), Shierlaw and Company (Clothing retailer), Gisborne Confectionary Works, the New Zealand Clothing Factory, Melbourne Cash (Drapers and milliners), Yates and McPhail (Grocers and provision merchants), and a garage.

In the foreground is a carriage advertising Primrose and Leslie Brothers (Saddlery). Other vehicles and pedestrians also occupy the street.
