About this object
A hand coloured photograph of a Pataka, a Māori storehouse, at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua. Part of an album of coloured scenery images.
A description of the scene has been pasted onto the album page. It reads: Where the Māori stored his food supplies. The Pataka, or provision house, wherein was deposited the kumara, sweet corn, roots etc, which formed the diet of the natives in the early days. This excellently carved model is found at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua and formed an attractive background for the photograph of the visiting tourists from Hawke's Bay.
