About this object
View of the memorial at Te Ngutu o te Manu, north-west of Hāwera, taken on 24 December 1914.

The memorial records the names of Pākehā settlers and soldiers who died in the two battles that occurred at this site on 21 August and 7 September 1868, fighting Māori led by Ngāti Ruanui chief Tītokowaru.

The photograph has been taken looking towards the back of the monument. A row of trees is visible in the background. A motor car is parked beneath the trees on the right side of the photograph.
