View of a beach, possibly Burney's Beach, in Queen Charlotte Sound otherwise known as Totaranui taken on 31 March 1902. In the foreground, a boat is moored on the shoreline. A man is seated in the boat smoking a pipe.
On 17 December 1773, ten men from Captain James Cook's consort vessel Adventure, are reported to have been killed and eaten by a group of local Maoris. A note on the album page states that the beach shown in this photograph was where Lieutenant Burney found first evidence of the massacre.
