The man is seated on a crate reading a newspaper. The newspaper held by the man is Volume CXI Issue 33 of the Evening Post, which was published on 9 February 1931. Page 7, which featured illustrations of earthquake damage, faces towards the camera.

In the background, a bicycle is parked against a timber fence.
