About this object
View of Dickens Street, Napier, taken following the Hawke's Bay earthquake on 3 February 1931.

The photograph has been taken from Dickens Street, possibly looking north east towards Hastings Street. On the right side of the photograph stands the Gaiety Theatre. Part of the front façade of this building has collapsed onto the street. Other businesses that are visible down the street include Mrs E McConnell's Tea Rooms, Mrs C S Mills (Confectioner), The Hawke's Bay Motor Company Limited, and Sargood, Son & Ewen Limited. In the distance, the air is filled with smoke. Tramlines are visible in the foreground. The street is occupied by people. Many of the people have bicycles.

Photographer, unknown.
