About this object
Portrait of a couple standing in front of the ruins of a building taken after the Hawke's Bay earthquake, which struck on 3 February 1931. The couple pose for the photograph on top of a pile of rubble. The walls of the building behind have partially collapsed.

The couple are identified on the back of the photograph as Dr and Mrs Fitzgerald. Dr William Douglas Fitzgerald and his wife Gladys operated a medical practice on the corner of Herschell Street and Marine Parade in Napier. They stayed in Napier after the earthquake and worked tirelessly to help earthquake victims.
