Brief Description
Typed report of the founding and history of the Tomoana Freezing Works. William Nelson established the meat freezing industry at Tomoana, beginning in 1880 with a boiling down and meat preserving works. The first shipment of frozen meat, consisting of mutton, lamb, pork and sheeps tongues left Port Chalmers, New Zealand 15 February 1882 and arrived in London 24 May 1882. Meat killing and freezing began in Tomoana in 1883. Statistics on killing capacity increases, staff increases and general output increases are listed.
