About this object
View of one of the sites where the crew of the Endeavour is said to have dug a well to collect fresh water. The site is located near Cook's Cove, Gisborne. The photograph was taken in 1901.
The album page on which the photograph is mounted states the following:
Cook's Well as shown by the Natives of the present day 1901 = this in an unlikely place and not anywhere near the place shown by the Chief Kani to J Polack in 1835. Chief Kani possibly refers to Te Kani-a-Takirau. The name J Polack likely refers to Joel Samuel Polack.
Photographer, Russell Duncan.
