About this object
View of one of the sites where the crew of the Endeavour is said to have dug a well to collect fresh water. The site is located near Cook's Cove, Gisborne. The photograph was taken in 1901.

The album page on which the photograph is mounted states the following:
Cook's Well - the position shown by the Chief Kani o Takirau to J Polack in 1835 - Described by Polack in his book - This place is not known to the Natives now, as the locality is pointed out further up the cave. Chief Kani o Takirau possibly refers to Te Kani-a-Takirau. The name J Polack likely refers to Joel Samuel Polack.

The photograph shows a water feature surrounded by plants. A coin appears to have been placed on the rock face.

Photographer, Russell Duncan.
