About this object
The Obstetrical Case Book belonged to Violet Powley of McHardy Maternity Hospital, Napier and Hastings Maternity Hospital when Violet transferred.
On the back of the front cover Violet has written: 3 February. Day of great upheaval.

The first page records that: Violet trained as a Maternity Nurse - her training began on 28 December 1931 and finished August 1931.

The purpose of the book was that: all entries were to be made by the pupil to whom it belongs and written up daily. On the completion of the pupil's training it had to be signed by the Matron. Violet's book was not signed.

The book begins with a list of the lectures, the name of the lecturer and dates that Violet attended while training.

It follows with assistances at labour, patients in labour that the nurse prepared, lying-in patients nursed, babies nursed for the first ten days or more, abdominal palpations, rectal examinations, abnormal cases seen, ante-natal patients examined and patients nursed in the lying-in wards the sub-section of which was: notes on the labour and the puerperium with special reference to the lochia, breasts and progress of infant. Each section gives the names of the patients, no of pregnancy, the date delivered and discharged and points of interest.
