About this object
View of Napier Grammar School on Napier Hill, taken in September 1879.

A group of male students pose in front of the school buildings. The main school building, which can be seen immediately behind the school group in the photograph, is of timber construction, with a shingle roof. Neo-Gothic in design the buttresses of the building terminate in pinnacles, while along the parapet miniature merlons simulate battlements. The building was relocated to another site on Napier Hill around 1918 and was renamed Ormond Chapel.

Photographer, Martin's Hawke's Bay Series of Photographs of Schools.
