Brief Description
Telegram from T W Lewis, Under Secretary of the Native Office in Wellington to George Preece, Resident Magistrate of Napier and dated 23 August 1882.
Lewis refers to a telegram by Mr Carr, Resident Engineer of Kopua, that reported obstructions by local Māori near Tahoraite in order to stop surveying for the laying of a railroad by pulling up survey pegs.
Carr writes that the Native Minister needs the line to be pushed through and that the police and armed constabulary can be used if advisable. Carr also advises that the group obstructing the process had been involved in other land obstructions which had been sorted by Inspector Scully of Napier, who he is advised to contact.
This is Courthouse number 574/82.
