In History of Hawke's Bay Part 1, The Māori History of Hawke's Bay, p. 31, written by W T Prentice, is the following: Tupurupuru - This man was the great grandson of Kahungunu and was a prominent Chief of the ever-increasing Ngati-Kahungunu tribe. He lived some eighteen generations ago (about 450 years) and was the fourteenth in the direct line from Toi. His father, Rakaihikuroa, was proud of his son who was a rising Chief and became the person of the greatest mana at Turanga.
