About this object
A photograph of the Great War Memorial Cross in the Cathedral Gardens on Hastings Street in Napier. The memorial was unveiled on 14 June 1924 by Robert Douglas Maclean. The plaque on the cross reads: In honoured memory of all those from Hawke's Bay who served in the Great War 1914-1918. Their name liveth for evermore.
St John's Cathedral, designed by the Christchurch-based architect Benjamin W Mountfort, can be seen on the right side of the photograph. This building was destroyed during the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931.
