The photograph shows Napier looking towards Marine Parade from Tiffen Park after the 3 February 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and fire.

Tennyson Street can be seen running across the photograph in the foreground and behind it is Emerson Street. The remains of the Masonic Hotel can be seen on the left below the Pacific Ocean. Blythes Ltd is the three storey building on Emerson Street.
