About this object
A photograph of floats travelling down Emerson Street in the New Napier Carnival Parade, January 1933. At the front of the parade procession a float of women are dressed to represent the arts and the artistic muses. A woman in medieval costume is seated with a spinning wheel at the front left of the float. To her right, another woman is seated working at a tapestry. A woman seated at the left of the float and wearing contemporary dress is seen painting. This is possibly Rita Angus. Behind her a woman holds scrolls possibly representing the Greek muse of history, Clio.
Several other woman are visible in the background including one holding a flute and wearing a headdress reading: Poetry. She presumably represents Euterpe the Greek muse of Poetry. At the very back of the float is a woman holding a book and wearing academic gowns and a mortarboard hat. Several other floats constructed around motor vehicles follow down the street. Spectators line the street. There are many onlookers seated on top of the shop awnings and in the windows of buildings.
The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
