About this object
A photograph of a Napier Gas Company Float for a procession. The elaborate float rests outside the office and one of the premises of the Napier Gas Company Limited. The photograph was possibly taken at their premises in Wellesley Road or Hastings Street. Several gas operated apparatuses and a boiler are set up along the float. The gas run devices appears to be operational as there is steam coming out of the ones at both ends of the float. The small fake brick house at the head of the float has steam coming from the chimney and may be a reconstruction of a bakery or forge. The signs along the float read: Gas Water Heaters Yield Ever Ready Hot Water; Gas Cooking Makes Cooking Easy. Several men are standing on the float dressed in semi-formal clothing and work wear. Several of these men have their sleeves rolled up.

Two men in suits stand on the roadway at the end of the float wearing suits. Another man is dressed less formally with a loose shirt and cap. A young man also stands with these men and is dressed in a school uniform or similar with a white sash wrapped around him. To their left, at the right of the image, two boys in decorated page-boy style suits stand holding the handle of a smaller float. The float is a small decorated cart with a child seated in it. The cart has an arched covering with a decorative crown on top. A horse is visible at the head of the float harnessed to the front of the float. A large tree is visible in the background of the image. A house can be seen in the background along the street at the left.

It is unclear whether the float was for a Napier Mardi Gras or perhaps a Royal visit or celebration.
