About this object
A group portrait taken at the laying of the Foundation Stones at the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), Napier on 30 August 1911.

The group is largely made up of women with a few children and men. They are standing on the street outside an empty lot between a corrugated iron shed and some small wooden buildings on the left hand side. It is notable that there is a significant proportion of Māori in the crowd.

Mohi Te Ātahīkoia is standing on the edge of the photograph at the left above the crowd. Father Augustine Venning is at the bottom at the extreme left edge of the image.

The stone laid into the wall at the left reads : This stone was laid by Puke Puke Tangiora. President of the Paki Paki W.C.T.U. 30 August 1911. The stone laid into the wall at the right reads : This stone was laid by Mrs (?) Oldham. President of the W.C.T.U. 30 August 1911.

The building under construction appears to be on Carlyle Street, Napier. Napier Hill is visible in the background of the image.
