About this object
An image of the Bissell Electrical Company float in the New Napier Carnival travelling along Marine Parade. The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.
The float displays batteries on a sloping construction with a pale material backing. There are small cubby-holes into which the batteries have been placed. At the top of the float the art deco style sign reads: Exide Battery Service, Bissell Electrical Co. The decorated vehicle is travelling along Marine Parade near the site of the South African War Memorial across from the Masonic Hotel. A spectator is standing on the side of the South African War Memorial. The memorial is without the mourning soldier statue that stood atop it, as it toppled during the earthquake. The cracks in the memorial are visible. The photograph is taken from a slightly elevated position. Spectators line both sides of Marine Parade. Some onlookers are standing on the sea wall.
Photographer unknown.
