About this object
An image of floats in the New Napier Carnival travelling along Marine Parade. Several decorated vehicles are travelling along Marine Parade near the intersection with Tennyson Street. The Red Cross float is visible in the foreground of the image turning into the parade convoy. Women are dressed in what appear to be national costumes. They are walking alongside the float constructed on the back of a flat-bed truck. The float in the front of the street appears to be for a plumber and handyman, possibly Williams and Son. Behind this is a float labelled N.G.C., likely the Napier Gas Company.

The photograph is taken from a slightly elevated position. Parade spectators line both sides of Marine Parade. Some are standing on the sea wall and public bench seats that line the Parade. The reserve area with trees is visible on the corner of Tennyson across the Council Chambers. The corner of the Council Chambers can be seen at the top right hand corner as well as the edge of Bluff Hill.

The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.
