About this object
An image of a group of floats in the New Napier Carnival Procession lined up along Marine Parade.

The New Napier Carnival, held from 21 to 28 January 1933, celebrated the opening of Napier after the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake. The floats are travelling south down Marine Parade. The photograph is possibly taken from the T & G building or its scaffolding on the corner of Emerson Street and Marine Parade, as it is taken from an elevated position.

The photograph captures the scene of milling parade spectators in front of the former Band Rotunda and Council Chambers on the corner of Tennyson Street and Marine Parade. There are men in uniforms and white caps carrying brass instruments and heading in the direction of the parade near the small reserve of trees in front of the Council Chambers. Many children with bicycles and families viewing the parade are evident in the foreground of the image and further along the length of Marine Parade. Norfolk Pines line the Parade.

Bluff Hill is visible in the background of the image at the left top hand corner. The float visible at the head of the parade is that of the Vulcan Foundry Company.
