About this object
A photograph of a celebratory procession in Napier. The parade is coming down Hastings Street and turning into Browning Street in the foreground. It appears to be heading toward Marine Parade. The image is thought to depict part of the celebrations of the Coronation of Edward VII, crowned 9 August 1902. Spectators fill both sides of the street and are crowded onto the balconies and into the windows of the surrounding buildings. Several buggies filled with onlookers are in the foreground of the image.
The float at the head of the procession turning into the street is comprised of a group of Māori men in a waka taua, or war canoe. The men are dressed in short sleeved white shirts and piupiu with trousers underneath. At the head of the boat a woman is seated. Many other horse drawn floats are travelling along Hastings Street. Flags are also strung on wires like bunting across the streets. On the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street the Hannah’s Department Store is evident.
