About this object
A photograph of Hastings Street taken from the Tennyson Street intersection looking south. The photograph is possibly a depiction of the Governor General, Lord Ranfurly’s (1897-1904) visit to Napier on 30 March 1898 for which a public holiday was observed in Napier. Crowds line both sides of the street and several are atop buildings or standing on shop awnings. A brass band is walking down the street in the direction of Browning Street. They are followed by military men including one on horse-back. A large group of infantry carrying bayoneted rifles follow.
The shops along the street are decorated with foliage and the Union Jack on a white background is flying from the building covered in scaffolding next to the Bank of Australasia. Flags are visible hanging on wire or string between buildings across Hastings Street in a bunting fashion. The businesses visible down Hastings Street include: J R Ross and Company; J F Ludwig, Watchmaker; Bank of Australasia; Kirkcaldie and Stains and John McVay.
Photographer unknown.
Date, 1898.
